Your brand is a survival signal.
That is the idea behind everything I teach. Long before logos and landing pages, people survived by reading signals fast. Is this new thing worth a look? Can I trust it? Is it working for me? Will someone help when it goes wrong? Your customers still ask those questions today. They just ask them about your product.
I'm Tony Crisp, Co-Founder and Chief Strategist of CRISPx in Newport Beach. I have spent more than 30 years in technology brand and marketing. Over that time I kept seeing the same pattern: people use, choose and stay with what their brain remembers as safe and rewarding. The DOSE Framework by Tony Crisp is my way of putting that pattern into a model any team can use.
What is the DOSE Framework?
The DOSE Framework is a model of the customer journey built on one thesis: your brand is a survival signal. It is a thesis I am still investigating, not settled science. But it gives teams a simple, human way to plan every message.
The Framework is the set of things you can download and learn from: the models, the guides, the worksheets and my working paper, "The DOSE Framework: Brand is a Survival Signal." The paper is on Zenodo (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.20337170) and listed on Wikidata.
DOSE stands for Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin and Endorphins. Each one lines up with a feeling at one step of the journey: desire, trust, satisfaction and relief. DOSE does not measure, release or control brain chemistry. It helps you plan for how people feel at each step.
The four stages: Seek, Use, Choose, Fix
The customer journey has four steps, in this order. Each step has one feeling you want to create, and each feeling is triggered by one of the four DOSE chemicals.
- Seek: Desire, triggered by dopamine
- Use: Trust, triggered by oxytocin
- Choose: Satisfaction, triggered by serotonin
- Fix: Relief, triggered by endorphins
1. Seek: desire (dopamine)
This is where people first notice you. Pattern recognition spots something new and worth a look, and desire kicks in: "Wait, I want that." Lead with their problem or a gap they did not see. Never promise what the next page can't deliver.
2. Use: trust (oxytocin)
Once people try you, every touch either builds trust or breaks it. Demos, onboarding, a first order, a first week with the product. The feeling you want is "These people get me, and this works like they said." Show empathy first, keep every promise, and share proof from people like them.
3. Choose: satisfaction (serotonin)
Trying is not the same as choosing. People commit to the brand that leaves them satisfied. The feeling you want is "This was the right call. I'm sticking with it." Show progress out loud. People keep choosing what they can see is working.
4. Fix: relief (endorphins)
Something will go wrong. That moment is a test. Quick, caring support turns fear into relief, and relief rewrites the memory as safe. The feeling you want is "They have my back." Handled well, a problem becomes a reason to stay and refer.
Why feelings beat features
Technology companies love specs. Specs matter. But specs are hard to remember, and if people cannot remember you, they cannot choose you. Marketing is about memorization.
As the saying often attributed to Maya Angelou goes, "People don't remember what you said, but they remember how you made them feel." The DOSE Framework takes that line seriously. It asks one question at every stage: what will this person feel, and will that feeling make them come back?
That is why I call a brand a survival signal. A strong brand tells the buyer's brain, quickly and clearly, that this choice is safe and rewarding.
The DOSE Method: putting the Framework to work
If the Framework is what you learn, the DOSE Method by Tony Crisp is what you do. The Method is the set of actions and services that apply the Framework to a real brand: audits, messaging, sprints and client work.
DOSE belongs to me personally. CRISPx is one of the agencies licensed to practice the DOSE Method. At CRISPx, we use it to map every message to a stage, find where buyers drop off, and fix the signal.
The four phases of the DOSE Method
The DOSE Method runs in four phases. These are the services that apply the Framework to your brand.
- Diagnose. Find where your brand signal breaks down across Seek, Use, Choose and Fix.
- Prescribe. Set the fixes: the messages, pages and moments to change at each step.
- Predict. Forecast how those changes should shift what buyers feel and do.
- Prove. Measure the results and show what worked.
You can see how CRISPx applies it on our DOSE Method page.
Where this thinking comes from
I did not build DOSE in a vacuum. It grew out of decades of launching hard tech products. CRISPx work has included brands like Element, Robosen, XFX, Syber and EVGA. Robosen is a California consumer robotics company. Syber is a gaming PC brand (sybergaming.com). In every case, the products were complex. The job was to make people feel something simple: curious, confident, rewarded and safe.
My background helps too. I studied Biological Sciences at UC Irvine. That training is part of why I look at brands through the lens of how people actually behave.
Not the same as TJ Power's DOSE
You may have seen another "DOSE" out there. TJ Power runs a well-known DOSE wellness program focused on personal happiness and daily habits. It is a separate project with a different goal. The DOSE Framework by Tony Crisp is about brands, buyers and the customer journey. The two are not connected.
How to start using DOSE this week
- Pick one page. Your home page or a top product page works well.
- Label each section Seek, Use, Choose or Fix.
- Find the gap. Most tech brands are heavy on features and light on Use, Choose and Fix.
- Write one line per stage that names the feeling you want.
- Test it with a real buyer. Ask what they remember an hour later.
